This tool will allow you to get quick distance measurements the same way you’d do in real world with a laser distancemeter: you put the distancemeter on a surface you pick the button and it  will throw a laser beam and it will calculate the distance to the first hit.

CSR_DIstancemeter will do the same within sketchup but with much more feedback.
